One of them is what you’re lowered into, Too hastily for everyone around you Stuck and suffocated, The other is dirt. One of them is what is cold sometimes, Warm others, What everyone seems to fall in without permission, And the other is love. One of them is what makes your knees dirty, What gets under your fingernails, What slams against your palms when you’re falling. And the other is dirt. One of them is what makes you wipe your palms off Before touching someone, What makes you weary about whether they’ll be disgusted, And the other is love. One…

Park Street is one of the most iconic destinations in Kolkata. This post title is entirely dedicated to the book, The Oxford Handbook to the Indian Constitution, which is unnecessarily long for a student pursuing a bachelors degree, just like this post, which is needlessly long for an average person only looking for good places to eat.  For one reason or the other, even person who has ever lived in Calcutta or is visiting Calcutta will insist on visiting Park Street for every single meal for the day. But what is so incredible and magnificent about the place, that…

We don’t get a lot of Action movies in the Hindi Film Industry. I think that’s because few directors have actually caught up with the kind of action that is expected from movies these days. Films like Bahubali, Dabbang and Raees can be called action movies but they are heavily stylised and don’t look or feel real. This one knows where its place is. It doesn’t go too far in order to impress you and neither does it do too little to underwhelm you. It hits the sweet spot in the middle where it consistently entertains you. The two very…

I really wanted this movie to be good. On paper, the idea of Imtiaz Ali teaming up with Shah Rukh Khan seems pretty special but this movie really didn’t end up being what either of them wanted it to be. Before getting into what’s wrong with the movie, let’s talk about what worked. Both Anushka Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan were good. The movie looks really good. Imtiaz Ali knows how to shoot a film and him and K. U. Mohanan don’t hold back. The very first song of the film, ‘Safar’, is really well done. The first half is…

I watched Mubarakan this weekend and I can’t really say that it is a bad movie. But what I can say is that it broke me. As I sat in the theatre and saw everyone around me laughing their asses off and having the time of their lives, I wondered why I couldn’t enjoy this movie like the rest of them? Instead of paying attention to the film I instead started wondering if I will ever actually be happy. Thankfully, I realised soon enough that it’s better not to open that door. This is a really loud movie. And I…

Lipstick Under My Burkha had to go through a lot of trouble before it hit theatres which is an amazing parallel. It’s ridiculous and upsetting to a see a movie about repressed women in society be declared unfit for public exhibition in India by a guy who recently claimed that films shouldn’t contain sequences of smoking and drinking because those activities are injurious to health. I do feel like a lot has already been said about how it was important for this movie to see the light of day so, I’m not going to talk about that. This movie…

Tamasha takes the first 15 minutes of the movie just to introduce Ved’s character. Which is pretty unorthodox for a movie that has been sold to us as a romance movie by its trailer. This is where you first start to see that this movie isn’t going to be just about the love story. I think we can all agree on the fact that Bollywood has no shortage of movies about love stories. There are at least two which come out every year and apart from each having its own quirk, they’re pretty much all the same. Boy meets girl,…

Monkey Bar, Kolkata: I left Kolkata/ Howrah right after my class 12 was over to pursue law at a university in Sonepat. While I was not very hopeful of the conditions there, I was definitely sure that Delhi will provide me with ample opportunities to train my tastebuds, and make up for the lack of good, new food joints that I had experienced back home over the four years of my stay here. I wasn’t disappointed. Delhi does have a huge range of culinary options for consumers to choose from. And Kolkata is catching up too. Since I spend most…
