Col. Chris Hadfield, an astronaut who got famous after the video of him covering Space Oddity went viral shared a list of the good things that happened in 2016. And I am pretty convinced, 2016 wasn’t that bad either. While 2016 was definitely marred by celebrity deaths, for those who care, there are other good things that happened in 2016. Here’s the list (with images added for your viewing pleasure): 1. The Colombian government and FARC rebels committed to a lasting peace, ending a war that killed or displaced over 7 million people. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-38153932 2. Sri Lanka spent five years…

Watched it yesterday and I’d like to say that it’s a good movie. But that’s pretty much it. You can sit through the entire film and find no flaws because it’s a ‘safe’ film. There was no room for error as the story itself is pretty simple. Look at anything Tom Hanks has made in the past decade. Most of those films are enjoyable and technically good films but none of them are truly excellent. They all have a straightforward plot and simple characters but there’s nothing that you haven’t seen before. Similarly, Dangal is a technically sound film. There…

It’s Christmas time and you want to wrap yourself in a blanket and sit around all day sipping on hot chocolate while you watch TV. If you’re tired of watching feel good films which don’t end in explosions and violence but want everything to stay Christmasy, here are five movies which might be what you’re looking for.  1. Die Hard Bruce Willis. Check. Guns. Check. Terrorists. Check. There aren’t many people who haven’t seen Die Hard but for the few who haven’t, now might be a good time to check it out. John McClane is at a boring Christmas party…

I’ve seen this movie twice now and I had more fun with it during the second viewing.  Damien Chazelle surprised everyone when he turned his short film into a motion picture with ‘Whiplash’ and bagged several Oscars. This movie follows the struggle that Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s characters go through to achieve their dreams. It’s a fault simple plot. Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), is a pianist who wants to keep Jazz alive but can only manage to get jobs where he’s told to play jingle bells. Mia (Emma Stone), is a struggling actress who has been waiting too long for…

If you haven’t seen this movie yet know that I will be discussing some aspects of the film which would take me into spoiler territory. You have been warned. Let’s talk about Darth Vader Now he’s only in the film for about 5 minutes and I was really okay with that as they did use him well. In this film you do get to see why he’s so feared by everyone in the empire. When Orson Krennic goes to talk to him, you can see him stuttering and shaking in his presence. His menace was established near the end when…

We now have a more than competent Star Wars Prequel. What a time to be alive.  Rogue One tells the story of the rebels who started the first fight with the empire by attempting to steal the plans of the Death Star. It follows Jyn Erso and a small team of people who decide to take it upon themselves to star the fight against the Empire. This movie is Directed by Gareth Edwards who in the past has shown how talented he is when it comes to handling films of a huge scale.  He is brilliant at showing the scale…

To be honest, I really didn’t expect anything from this film. The fact that I got a few laughs out of this one was actually surprising. Other than that, nothing else about this movie is commendable.  Aditya Chopra has been around since the 90’s and this is just the fourth film that he has directed. It’s amazing how uninspired his work is even after all the years he has spent in the movie business as a prominent personality. This movie isn’t terrible, but, it saddens me that Yash Raj Films, one of the biggest film production houses in the country…

This is Gaurie Shinde’s second film. Her first film, (English Vinglish) despite its simple plot and unflattering cast, resonated with the masses and turned out to be a major success. With Dear Zindagi, it seems like she’s done quite the same. She took a fairly simple plot and made a film that you will be able to (at least partly) relate to.  Alia Bhatt plays a character who often feels the need to be in an intimate relationship and be able to share her life with another but finds it difficult to do so. She manages to be cause of the…

I know that making the actors in the film sing their own songs is the latest gimmick amongst film makers but can we please stop? For a film that revolves around music, the whole album sounds extremely dated and under produced.  It’s been 8 years since Abhishek Kapoor made the first rock on and the film holds up really well even after almost a decade. One of the reasons that the first film worked was that it told a very simple story about a group of people who learn to put aside their differences and resurrect their friendship. This movie…
